Father’s Day Presents… what to give the man who wants for nothing.

Father’s Day Presents… what to give the man who wants for nothing.

Father’s Day is approaching, which means families everywhere are entering that annual state of mild panic known as “What on earth do we buy Dad?”

It should be easy. Dads are simple creatures, apparently. They like sitting down, getting up to go to the pub, knowing where the remote is, telling you the quickest route even when nobody asked, and saying “I’ll just have a look at that” before disappearing into the shed for three hours. And yet, when it comes to buying them a present, suddenly they become the most mysterious people on the planet.

Ask Dad what he wants and you’ll usually get one of three classic responses:
“Nothing.”
“You can’t afford what I want.”
“Just a bit of peace and quiet.”
Which isn’t exactly helpful.

So, what do you buy the man who claims he wants nothing but already owns six torches, three tape measures, a barbecue he refers to as “the big one”, and a drawer full of cables from 2004?

You buy him a funny beer or drink T-shirt. Obviously.

Let’s be honest, a drink-themed T-shirt is one of the great Father’s Day gifts. It sits in that magical sweet spot between practical, personal and mildly ridiculous — which is exactly where Dad lives most of the time. It’s something he can actually wear, something that will make him laugh, and something that says, “We know you, we love you, and yes, we have noticed that your personality does become 40% more confident after one pint.”

A beer T-shirt is not just clothing. It is a statement. It tells the world, “Here stands a man who enjoys a beverage, a barbecue, and possibly offering unsolicited advice about mowing the lawn.” Whether he’s a lager legend, an ale afficionado, a whisky whisperer or a gin-loving gent, we’ve got a drink T-shirt at Lit-Tees that will suit his taste.

And unlike some Father’s Day gifts, it will not end up gathering dust in a cupboard next to the novelty golf balls and the “World’s Best Dad” mug from 2018. A funny T-shirt gets used. It gets worn to the pub, on holiday, at the barbecue, while gardening, while “supervising” someone else doing DIY, and occasionally to family gatherings where Mum says, “Are you really wearing that?”

That, of course, is when Dad knows the shirt has truly succeeded.

The beauty of a beer or drink T-shirt is that it does not take itself too seriously. Neither do most dads. This is a man who probably owns a “good coat”, a “scruffy coat” and a “coat for doing jobs”. He does not need another luxury item that requires careful handling. He needs something comfortable, funny and strong enough to survive being worn while standing too close to a barbecue.

It is also a gift with personality. Anyone can buy socks. Socks say, “I remembered Father’s Day, but only just.” A funny drink T-shirt says, “I saw this and immediately thought of you — mainly because it mentions beer and terrible decision-making.”
Better still, it gives Dad something he secretly loves: a guaranteed conversation starter. Dads adore a conversation starter. They pretend they don’t, but give them a T-shirt with a decent joke on it and they will happily stand in a pub garden explaining it to strangers like it’s a TED Talk.

And let’s not forget the all-important Father’s Day photo. Every family needs that classic picture of Dad holding his present, doing the awkward thumbs up, wearing an expression that says, “I like this, but I’m not emotionally equipped to show it properly.” A beer T-shirt makes that moment even better. It gives him something to grin about, something to wear straight away, and something that might just become his new favourite top — even if he refuses to admit it.

So this Father’s Day, don’t overthink it. Don’t wander the aisles wondering whether Dad needs another multi-tool, bottle opener, or mug with a moustache on it. Get him something funny, wearable and perfectly suited to his favourite hobbies: relaxing, laughing, and enjoying a well-earned drink.

Because while Dad may say he wants nothing, what he really means is: “Please buy me something I can wear to the pub.” And that, surely, is where the beer T-shirt comes in.

The perfect Father’s Day gift? We’ll drink to that.
